how healthy eating works
You’ve had a bad day so you eat a cupcake. You’re bored, so you grab a slice of pizza. Many people turn to food for comfort. It’s called “emotional eating.” And when you’re trying to take control of your weight, it can be your worst enemy. Eating is meant to give our bodies the energy we need to live, but many of us are eating for emotional needs or other reasons.
Understanding hunger
To understand how emotional hunger works, it's important to know about the two types of hunger:
- Internal hunger
or “stomach hunger” is true physical hunger. It’s that empty feeling in your stomach when you haven’t eaten anything in several hours.
- Emotional hunger
isn’t about your body’s need for nutrients. External hunger is also called “mouth hunger,” and is caused by triggers, a memory, a scent, and, quite often, emotions.
